Alga Mau

"If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother trying to say it in music."

Gustav Mahler

Welcome to my catalogue of compositions!

My name's Alga, I'm 19 years old and currently a 2nd year audiology student at the University of Southampton. I play both piano and clarinet proficiently though I also have a little experience with guitar and various traditional Chinese instruments (erhu, dizi and bawu).

Piano was my first instrument, I started my first lessons when I was 4 but I guess you can argue that I only really started "playing piano" from 10 onwards. My first teacher wasn't that great so I only got up 2 grades in the 6 years I was with her but when I changed teacher, my potential was "unlocked" (as she said once or twice, I believe) and she helped me achieve my grade 8 within 4 years. My love for music was highly sparked by starting clarinet in school at 8 years old, learning more about different types of music and soon joining the then Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Service (now a trust) in the Junior orchestra. I have spent 7 years with them, going through the different levels of groups, most notably spending my last 3 years with the County Youth Concert Band.

Now, as a University of Southampton student, I am in my 2nd year with the Southampton University Symphony Orchestra (SUSO) on clarinet and am currently secretary of the UoS Piano Society.

Over the years, my compositions have been greatly influenced by works from East Asia, both traditional and current. I compose both for solo piano and for orchestra (symphony and wind). Currently, I have written one wind orchestra piece, "Spirit" (link to a recording at the bottom) and have another wind orchestra piece and a symphony orchestra piece in the works.

If you've survived reading my cheesy biography then please take the time to check out my compositions. More will be coming soon!

Thank you for your time and support!
